New Book from TLC’s Cake Boss - Stories and Recipes from Mia Famiglia

“In this heartfelt memoir, master baker and star of the #1 hit TLC show, Buddy Valastro tells his inspiring story—and recounts his family's warm memories from a lifetime of living, loving, and cake making.

Television viewers have fallen in love with Buddy Valastro, master cake maker, and his funny and fiery family, proprietors of Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken , New Jersey , on the smash hit TLC series Cake Boss. Now, to coincide with Carlo's 100th anniversary, cake designer extraordinaire Buddy Valastro brings together his passion for baking and his high-energy family stories in the pages of this charming, heartwarming book—complete with 25 recipes and tips that will make every reader the "cake boss" of their own kitchen.

Buddy's beautifully designed cakes are the stuff of legend—and so is the remarkable story of his father, a beloved pillar of the community and himself a talented baker who set the stage for his family's rise to the pinnacle of their industry. Cake Boss recounts the story of Buddy's life and of his family's bakeshop, originally established in 1910 and now a Hoboken , New Jersey , landmark and culinary tourist destination. Here also are twenty-five recipes for Carlo's Bakery's most sought-after pastries, pies, cupcakes, and cakes, an irresistible combination of time-tested old-world recipes and modern creations, all founded on a rock-solid "old-school" baking foundation and classic techniques.

This is the incredible true story of how Carlo's Bakery came to be, how one hard-working family realized their patriarch's dream of making their beloved bake shop a household name. The special bond and loving dynamic of the Valastro clan make this an uncommonly touching and truly inspiring memoir.” – Simon and Schuster

Christmas Candy and Carnations Centerpiece from Cooking with Paula Deen Magazine

It’s that time of year…still full from Thanksgiving but time to start pulling out the Christmas decorations. This was another fun idea from the Cooking with Paula Dean Magazine. She filled glass vases with candy canes and Hammond ’s Candies and topped them with carnation balls. This Christmas Mix Tin from Hammond ’s Candies looked like the perfect assortment.

Personalized Cappuccino Stencils from Cooking with Paula Deen Magazine

I came across this great idea in “Cooking with Paula Deen” Magazine to give a cappuccino fan or if you love to host.

Supplies:

- Photocopies of favorite image or monogram letter

- Plastic recyclable take out beverage lids, large enough to fit over a coffee cup

- craft knife

- hole punch and ribbon – if giving it as a gift

1. Photocopy an image.

2. Place the photocopy on the underside of each lid and draw the outside of the object on the front side of the lid with a pencil.

3. Being very careful, use a sharp craft knife to cut out each object following the pencil lines.

4. Punch two holes on the top of the lid and tie a ribbon though, if you plan to give as a gift.

To use: After pouring frothed milk into cappuccino, hold the stencil over the cup (being as close to the foam as you can without touching it), and shake cocoa powder or ground cinnamon over it. Remove stencil, and serve.

Local Aran Goyoaga’s blog, Cannelle Et Vanille

Aran Goyoaga, a Basque ex-pat living in the US since 1998, created Cannelle Et Vanille, her blank canvas for creating anything and everything sweet that comes from her heart. Why the name Cannelle Et Vanille? Because those are the smells and tastes of her childhood and this blog is very much filled with nostalgia.

Her recipes are all gluten-free after realizing she had a gluten sensitivity. She is the mother of a boy and a girl who keep her busy and a freelance food writer, stylist and photographer in South Florida . This blog is her journal of recipes, travels and life stories.

She has been featured on GOOP’sTop Ten Favorite Food Blogs and Sites” by Gwyneth Paltrow, InStyle Magazine, Martha Stewart Weddings, New York Times and Real Simple to name a few.

Young Friends of The Norton Event “ Nick Cave - Meet me at the Center of the Earth” November 10, 2010 from 6-8 p.m.

This exhibition will feature approximately forty of Nick Cave ’s Soundsuits: multi-layered, mixed media, wearable sculptures designed to captivate visitors of all ages and bring together visual and performing arts for a unique museum experience.

As reminiscent of African, Mardi Gras and religious ceremonial costumes as they are of haute couture, the Soundsuits explore ceremony, ritual, myth and identity through a subtle layering of references expressed through highly skilled techniques, varied traditions and an array of ordinary, scavenged yet seductive materials. By transforming discarded objects into works of art, he encourages the viewer to connect with the pre-history of the objects as well as the potent imagery of the Soundsuits themselves. Inviting viewers to join him at the ―Center of the Earth, Nick Cave offers a vision of a world turned upside down and inside out.

Please RSVP to Cherryl Cannon at youngfriends@norton.org or 561-832-5196 ext. 1118. Pistache is also donating 20% of dinner checks to Young Friends of the Norton.

Organized by the Yerba Buena Center for Arts, San Francisco.
Local sponsorship of this exhibition is made possible in part through the generosity of The Milton and Sheila Fine Endowment for Contemporary Art, The Dr. Henry and Lois Foster Endowment for Contemporary Art and The Contemporary and Modern Art Council of the Norton Museum of Art.
Media support provided by The Miami Herald / El Nuevo Herald.

Haunted House and Sweet Treats by Southern Belle's Cakery

Over the weekend I attended the clever and creative Halloween Party hosted by

Bite-sized "mummy fingers" started off the appetizers. The dessert table featured cake pops decorated as ghosts and Frankenstein, cupcakes with layered white chocolate pretzels as skeletons with many other treats. Guests enjoyed non-alcoholic jello "shots" in syringes.

Painted pumpkins were displayed throughout the house.. Frankenstein, spider webs, etc. The yard decor was impressive too. They must have spent weeks getting it all ready!

And what else better than the host to be a cupcake... of course!
