Promoting During An Economic Downturn

Public relations is one of the most effective tools for promoting any business, which is helpful when budgets are low. Instead of cutting down communication efforts, this is the time to start ramping them up.

Below are three reasons why PR is an ideal marketing communications strategy, especially during a recessionary period.

1. Return on Investment
Successful PR, as a practice, can generate a higher return on investment than other forms of promotion, simply because the investment is normally less. For example, a Procter & Gamble Co. study that examined the marketing of six of its brands for three years found PR was the most effective tactic for three of its brands, delivering a 275% ROI.

2. Credibility- Earned vs. Paid
Unlike paid media, earned media coverage has more weight and credibility in the minds of consumers because the information is delivered and received through credible third-party sources, such as newspapers, TV or radio stations. These delivery channels also carry an implied endorsement of a company, product or service.

3. Builds Relationships
According to the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), “Public relations builds relationships and creates an ongoing dialogue of interaction and involvement with an organization’s target audiences and those who influence those audiences.” Establishing mutually beneficial relationships has never been more important for businesses to succeed. Consumers’ decision-making strategies are increasingly being based on or from trusted sources and information.

Personalizing a Wine Bottle for Special Occasions

In celebration of my friends’ event company launch, I wanted to give them something very unique and with a personal touch. Since the name of their company is Bellafare with Italian meaning, I bought an Italian bottle of wine. To spice things up and personalize the bottle, I took their company logo and created a wine label. Then, I printed the label on matte coated sticker project paper and placed it on the bottle of wine. As the finishing touch, I wrote a congratulations note with a silver Sharpie marker right on the bottle. This idea is perfect for a recent engagement, a friend’s birthday or any other important milestone.

Giving Your Table Centerpieces a Makeover

For our Spark After Dark event, we decided to use battery operated tea light candles in a glass vase wrapped around with vellum paper as our table centerpieces. When the candle is lit, the vellum paper gives off an elegant effect allowing the colors to pass through it, like a stained glass window. Here are the steps we used to create our table centerpiece. Vellum paper, can be purchased at most craft stores. It also comes in many different colors, both solid and patterned, so you can always find a style that matches the mood of your project.

Supplies Used:

  • Vellum Paper
  • Super Glue
  • Tealight Candles
  • Cylinder Vases

Directions:

  1. Load the vellum paper into an inkjet or laser printer, just like regular paper. Trim edges to fit into the paper tray, if necessary. Make sure your paper is compatible with the printer.
  2. Choose your design. We chose our signature spark stripe with the “spark after dark” logo. We printed the colored stripe pattern onto clear vellum paper.
  3. Cut your vellum design down to the size to fit around the cylinder vase. We used super glue to hold both ends together. You could also punch holes in each end of the vellum and secure with ribbon.
  4. Insert battery operated tea light candle.

Response to Controversial Time Magazine Titled "Why Exercise Won't Make You Thin"

On Monday August 10th, 2009 the American College of Sports Medicine sent a message to ASCM certified fitness professionals, addressing the false claims made in the recent August 17, 2009 Time magazine cover article titled, “Why Exercise Won’t Make You Thin.” http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1914857,00.html

In the face of an obesity epidemic in the United States and around the world, such a message is not only false but potentially dangerous. Among the many myths suggested in the article, the author would have readers believe that:

  • Losing weight matters more than being aerobically fit in preventing heart disease
  • One can’t lose weight from exercise because exercise makes you hungrier – and willpower can’t conquer the hunger enough to make good food choices
  • Exercising 60 to 90 minutes most days of the week in order to lose weight (a recommendation from an ACSM Position Stand) is unrealistic
  • Leisure-time physical activity – just moving around more during the day – is more effective for weight loss than dedicated exercise
  • Vigorous exercise depletes energy resources so much that it leads to overeating – i.e., weight gain

“These points directly contradict with the overwhelming science that supports the role of exercise in the achievement and maintenance of long term weight loss,” states Marissa Lysaght, owner of Fitness Re-defined in Jupiter, Fla. “The “science” used to support the author’s position was hardly conclusive and primarily based on empirical and anecdotal evidence. Indeed, the author’s representation of his hypothesis as fact is irresponsible journalism to say the least; particularly in light of the ever-declining physical activity levels among American adults and our children.”

Marissa Lysaght, owner of Fitness Re-defined in Jupiter, Fla., is an American College of Sports Medicine certified personal trainer and holds a Master’s degree in Public Health. She has extensive graduate-level and career experience in the field of obesity treatment and prevention and would like to address the claims set forth in the article, set straight the myths, and expose the facts behind the article’s argument that may have misled the author’s position on exercise. For more information visit www.fitnessredefined.com or contact Marissa at 561-353-8343.

Top 5 Gift Ideas for Thoughtful Hostess Gifts

A gift for your hostess doesn't need to be extravagant, but a little creativity does go a long way toward making this present surprising and special.

1. Cookbook/ Book:
Try selecting a cookbook geared towards his/her interests. They might also enjoy a book on party planning, home décor, or even a guest book.

2. A Bottle of Wine/ Wine Charms:
Jazz it up a little bit and wrap your wine bottle with tissue paper and tie it with a ribbon. Another popular way of presenting wine is in a gift basket. Load it up with cheese or fruit in addition to the bottle of wine.

3. Gift Cards/Certificates:
If you don't know your hostess' favorite shop, a grocery store, liquor store and/or home improvement store certificate is a great solution.

4. Flowers:
Choose your favorite arrangement and put them in a vase. The hostess won't have time to cut the stems and prepare them herself.

5. Chocolates/ Sweets:
Can't go wrong here! For the hostess who loves sweets, a candy basket or a chocolate basket full of all these goodies is a perfect treat.

Jessica Ricci – Inspiration to Creation
Jessica Ricci hails from Providence -- in Rhode Island, of course. She studied English literature at Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts, and after graduating Ricci moved to Montana where she volunteered for an emergency services organization and began her first hand-made jewelry line of simple beaded necklaces.

Eventually Ricci made her way back to Rhode Island where she worked for a small local newspaper. She received her graduate degree from New York University's school of journalism, and worked for several publications during and after her studies.

In 2001, Ricci decided to move to Italy and pursue her interests in writing and creating jewelry and it was in Rome where she became serious about making and designing jewelry. Ricci’s simple hand-crafted designs are anchored in symbolism, history, and sentimentality, and bring together her love of travel, jewelry and cultural significance, researched and experienced firsthand to relay something original and real.

Upon her return to the States in 2005, Ricci officially founded JL Ricci Designs, and today she creates and produces the Raw Jewelry and Market 2 Market collections.
