Tip Tuesday: “The Power of Nice: How to Conquer the Business World with Kindness” by Linda Kaplan Thaler and Robin Koval

This Tip Tuesday I wanted to share the book I am currently reading, “The Power of Nice: How to Conquer the Business World with Kindness” by Linda Kaplan Thaler and Robin Koval.”
In an era when the corporate world glorifies a dog-eat-dog mentality, these two dynamic women built the Kaplan Thaler Group, one of the nation’s fastest-growing advertising agencies, not with spears and intimidation, but with flowers and chocolates.

But don’t confuse being “nice” with being a push-over. Kaplan Thaler and Koval explain in a series of entertaining anecdotes that being nice in the business world conveys strength and assertiveness. Nice people address problems, motivate teams, and win high profile accounts. They just do so with a positive and memorable style.

Chapter Excerpt: Chapter 1: The Power of Nice
For years, we have loved a particular security guard in our Manhattan office building. In fact, most of us at the Kaplan Thaler Group think the world of him. A large, jovial man in his mid-fifties, Frank brightens people’s days by giving everyone who walks into our building a huge, warm greeting. “Hello, Linda!” “Hello, Robin!” he’ll say. “Happy Friday!”
Frank’s engaging banter changed the way we started work in the morning. Instead of simply flashing our passes anonymously and making a beeline for the elevator, we found ourselves seeking out Frank and making sure to say hello. He set a positive tone for the entire day. But we never considered how Frank might be helping our business, other than preventing intruders from entering the premises.
That is, until the day Richard Davis, the president and COO of U.S. Bank, the sixth-largest bank in the United States, came to see us. For months, our entire team at the Kaplan Thaler Group had been working to create a pitch that would wow Davis and win us the huge U.S. Bank account.
At the time of Davis’s visit, it was down to the wire. We were one of two agencies still in the running for the account. Davis and his team were flying in from their executive offices in Minneapolis to meet personally with us. We didn’t realize it at the time, but in fact Davis and his staff were a bit apprehensive about the kind of treatment they’d get in New York City. The furious pace and hard-bitten “out of my way” attitude of the Big Apple had become part of the mythology of the city. They were afraid we would be too cold, too aloof.
But when Richard Davis and his team walked into our building, they received a warm, enthusiastic greeting from Frank. When Davis reached our offices a few minutes later, he was gushing about the friendly security guard. “This guy gave me a huge hello!” he said. “And all of a sudden, I thought how could I not want to work with a company that has someone like Frank? How can I feel anything but good about hiring an agency like that?” We won the account.
Of course, Davis wouldn’t have awarded us the job if he wasn’t impressed with our work. But we’ve gotta give Frank credit. With a multimillion-dollar account in the balance, it was Frank’s warm hello that helped us cinch the deal.
That is the power of nice.

Cecconi’s at Soho Beach Beach House – a delight to all the senses

For those off work today for the holiday, hope you are enjoying yourself. As for me, I am still dreaming of Cecconi’s in the Soho Beach House. I am a sucker for lights of any kind, so the décor and ambience was perfection in my book...and the food was delish to boot. Hanging mason jars, light-wrapped trees mixed with rustic elements all while feeling like you were in an outdoor garden…I can’t wait to go back. To add to the fun, we ran into Leandra from The Man Repeller and Danielle from DANNIJO Jewelry. If you are in Miami and have a chance to make a res, it’s definitely worth it.

Winter ONEderland – My niece’s First Birthday with Concierge Couture

I just had to share the “Winter ONEderland” my sister created for my niece’s First Birthday over the weekend. Everything came together so well and it was a beautiful day with friends and family. Jump over to Concierge Couture’s blog to see more.

One party-planning tip I wanted to share:
If you look around your house, there are often things you can use in new ways. One fun element were the snowflake ornaments turned into centerpieces. These gold snowflakes were hanging on my Christmas tree and we spray painted them silver and attached them to wooden skewers in small pots that we spray painted silver (they were gold before too).

The Night Before The Night Before Christmas

As guests arrived they were serenaded by Dickens-era carolers, and as they followed the red carpet into the house, the Rockettes were there to meet and greet with photo opps. The tent was transformed into a true Christmas story. There were more than 60 Christmas trees wrapped in white lights surrounding the tent and ornament and greenery-draped chandeliers hung from the clear top tent. Each cocktail table had a plaid linen with centerpieces that consisted of a Christmas wreath and a candle lit lantern. Guests danced the night away to The Edge Band and there were also two special performances from the Rockettes. Milk and cookies and Irish coffee were passed around to end the perfect Christmas Spectacular. Photography by LILA PHOTO.

This Saturday Join Author James Gabler at Virginia Philip Wine Shop & Academy

This Saturday Join Author James Gabler alongside the Virginia Philip Wine Shop & Academy team as he discusses the two true passions of Thomas Jefferson: Wine and Travel.

Saturday, January 7, 2012 1:00pm - 2:30pm, $50

Jefferson (known for spelling words phonetically rather than correctly) once called wine a "necessary of life." His love for drinking was combined with his interest in the viticulture and vinification of wine. He took concise notes on soil and rootstocks in Portugal, France, and Germany. He experimented with grape growing in both his homes, France and the United States. Many of his favorite wines such as the First Growths of Bordeaux, the Grand Crus of Burgundy and the Brunellos of Italy are considered amongst the top wines in the world today.
